AHL Rule Book - Milwaukee’s Reid Schaefer Suspended

Earlier today, the American Hockey League’s Player Safety Committee announced the one-game suspension of Milwaukee Admirals’ forward Reid Schaefer as a consequence of his actions on May 8.

During the first period, Schaefer laid a hit on Texas Stars defender Luke Kryswhile chasing down, which led him to be assessed a Major Penalty and Game Misconduct for Charging.

Below is what the 2023-24 AHL Rule Book says about Charging:

Rule 42.1 - Charging

A minor or major penalty shall be imposed on a player who skates or jumps into, or charges an opponent in any manner.

Charging shall mean the actions of a player who, as a result of distance traveled, shall violently check an opponent in any manner. A “charge” may be the result of a check into the boards, into the goal frame, or in open ice.

Rule 42.3 - Major Penalty - Charging

The Referee, at his or her discretion, may assess a major penalty, based on the degree of violence of the check, to a player guilt of charging an opponent (see 42.5)

Rule 42.5 - Game Misconduct - Charging

When a major penalty is imposed under this rule for an infraction resulting in an injury to the face or head of an opponent, a game misconduct shall be imposed
